WHITE BREAD

The Seven Deadly Sins
Collaborative
Another collaborative piece is “Objects Of Desire” Linda’s part of the piece is called “Lifted” and includes a paper parasol, a clove of garlic and a roll of candy, all things she stole as a very young child (what little kid steals garlic?).
My portion of the piece is called “Hidden” and includes a light bulb, an extension cord and a shovel, objects I hid when my first marriage was ending; that I thought I would need to survive.
“See No, Speak No, Hear No” is also a collaborative piece. This tabernacle form is one that I use in my work a lot. I built the forms, Linda did the backgrounds for the outer two and I built the creatures, I did the background for the central piece and she made the mina bird. The mixed media on the bottom of the work includes words and lots of visual symbolism relating to the pieces. We decided to give them fezzes because they seem to refer to monkeys (even on Shriners).

A Comment About White Bread By Angela

Linda and I have been friends for quite a while and have a lot in common. We are both professional studio potters with two dimensional art backgrounds. We travel and play together often. We’ve been teaching workshops together, we talk on the phone, brainstorm, help each other with technical problems and most of all laugh a lot. For several years we have been talking about doing some collaborative work. We work differently with similar materials. The White Bread theme came up a few years ago while we were considering the large number of artists who were using their ethnic heritage as subject for exploration. We both found the idea compelling, but reflecting on our own collective middle class, white girl upbringing made us realize that we were at a loss for any recognizable past cultural references. So we decided to create our own. The outcome is White Bread: Two Middle Class White Girls Explore Their Ethnic Heritage Through Art.

Linda and I found a lot of common threads and themes while reflecting about our respective childhoods that we tried to weave into the work for this show. We don’t have political agendas or much angst to impart. Still there are lots of things hidden in the work. A great example of our lack of cultural heritage is reflected in The Seven Deadly Sins. We chose this as a collaborative theme, drew our assigned sins out of a hat and then realized we were clueless. We did some research and discovered that each sin has it’s own representative animal, color, contrary virtue and punishment in hell. So that’s how we proceeded, and with the realization that if you do enough research the work practically makes itself.

We hope you enjoy the show and that it makes you laugh.
